babies don't keep

I'm going to be real with you guys, team meeting. I'm not ready for Sophie to go into daycare.  I'm just not.  I told myself I would be, and that it would be okay, but I'm really just not okay with it.  We were supposed to put her in daycare when she turned a year, then a year and four months, then we pushed it back until August of this year, that's when she would be a year and half.

Well we're in August, and she's not in daycare.  We spent all of this weekend talking about it and hemming and hawing at the best thing to do for her and for us.  We kept her out of daycare because well, daycare can cost as high as $1000.  And that's like renting a small apartment.  We also haven't found a daycare that we're in love with.  I'm just not ready and  I can't accept the fact that my child is indeed growing up.

babies don't keep

It seems like yesterday Kyle and I were wading through the deep end of parenthood.  We were brand new parents just meeting Sophie.  She was so small and so calm.  I was  so happy to meet her, Kyle was so happy, we both were.  Nothing could describe the first time we met Sophie. She fit in my arms so perfectly, and in her father's.  She was just so tiny.  I remember rocking her to sleep in the hospital, kissing her on her forehead and holding her close.

She fit perfectly in my arms for being rocked to sleep.  She cuddled into Kyle when he held her while she slept.  I remember her sleeping on our chests and gripping our shirts while sleeping.  I miss that.  I miss the moments where she fit on my chest perfectly.  She loved holding our hands while taking in the world.  She laughed when we made funny faces and cried when she wasn't held.  Sophie loved snuggles and naptime.  She would just lay there making sure both of us were within arm reach.

She loved her bouncer and loved being able to watch us in the kitchen, happily playing with all of the gadgets and stuffed animals attached to it. I can still remember Sophie taking her first real steps right into Daddy's arms, giggling the whole way.  And when he caught her, she snuggled into his arms for a few moments before getting up and trying again.  Days have passed since Sophie just sat and watched the cat running around her laughing as Fluffy would flick her tail gently on her legs.  Now Sophie just chases after the cat looking for hugs and cuddles.

babies don't keep

Sophie can't even fit in all of her cute clothes anymore.  Seems just like last week I was telling Kyle how small Sophie was compared to other babies, and now she's so huge compared to them.  She loves sitting in our laps and watching videos of herself.  She has a grand old time chasing Fluffy, climbing up onto the couch and digging into things.  Sophie loves carrying my purse around, and just hanging out in the kitchen with mommy.

Sophie, you're 18 months old. a far cry from the newborn you once were.  But you will always be our baby.

  1. Aww, what a sweet little face! :) I can totally relate to the daycare struggle. I didn't put my kids in daycare until my oldest was 4 and my youngest was 2, but we had family who helped out. But omg, the EXPENSE. Shew.

  2. I'm definitely not qualified to be giving advice, but I feel like you guys should do what is right for Sophie and for your family. If that's daycare, then great. If not, that's great too! I'm sure you will make the right decision :)

  8. Aww, so sweet!! 18 months is one of my favorite ages ever!!! I cried and cried and had to stay home from work the day our daughter had to start daycare at 20 months, and she only went for a month or two before my mom started watching her instead. Then she went again at age 3 when it was more "preschool" and I was MUCH more comfortable with it!!! It's much easier when they can actually tell you what they did/if they like it or not, etc.

  19. Awww this was so sweet!! She will always be your baby girl - regardless of how old she is! When you're ready to send her to daycare you'll be ready - until then just keep doing what you guys are doing! xo, biana - BlovedBoston

  20. Awww that has to be so hard. My mom was just commenting how she needs my some grandbabies because she misses having a little baby to hold.

Unfortunately for her the most she's getting from me is granddogs. Hopefully my brother and his wife will be more helpful!

  22. Oh momma.... this post made me SO emotional! Time just isn't fair!! You're right- babies don't keep! And it's SO hard to let go of them!
You're such an amazing mom and she's so lucky to have you!

  23. You are so right. I have a love/hate thing going on right now. I love experiencing all the fun new milestones and getting to do more things with my daughter, but I hate that she's growing up so fast. I love being able to squeeze and cuddle my little girl and I'm already dreading the day she stops wanting me to. :(

As far as daycare goes, I did NOT want to send her at all. I never went to daycare as a kid and I just thought it would be awful. We did find a daycare we love and it is truly a great thing. Watching her interact with the other kids just melts my heart. And her teachers are amazing and she is learning SO much. Keep searching; you will know when you find the right one. Good luck!

  25. Sophie is such a cutie! I totally understand not wanting to put her in daycare. My son was suppose to be in daycare, but 2 weeks before I was suppose to go back to work, we decided to just make the budget work on one income so that I can stay home with him. It was the best decision! You are right, babies don't keep, and we will never get this precious time back. I'm so glad you have been able to stay home with your daughter and make some great memories!

  26. You're not wrong, the days fly by with young kids and you should treasure as much of it as you are able to. My youngest now does 4 mornings at preschool and while I quite like being able to get chores finished without 'help' I am always so happy to go and collect him

    1. Yes too true. The days are long and the years are short. The "help" is hilarious, Sophie loves helping me out in the kitchen.

  27. My friends with babies + children are always talking about how crazy expensive daycare is- it's insane! I know what you mean about not being ready- it has to feel right. And they just grow up so fast!

  28. This is so hard. It is so fun seeing them grow up and learn new things...but it's so sad when they grow out of a stage. And you guys do daycare when it feels right and you're ready!

  32. such a sweet post! and so true.
i don't have kids yet but i want to stay home with them for as long as possible, but then i do know daycare or things like it are good for social interaction and stuff. but like i said, no kids lol. the main reason for us is the $$. it's ridiculous!

  35. Oh boy do babies not keep! It's hard, yet joyous. I know I'm often marveling at how big and grown up Baby Boy is now. He's so slim compared to when he was an infant. He's so full of personality and doing and interacting and learning and growing. It almost hurts, that special mom hurt, just to watch or listen to him playing and moving about. I remember the days when he was still small enough that we could all comfortably curl up together like a cocoon and now, he needs more space, so the curling up has expanded.... :)

  38. What a wonderful post! You couldn't be more spot on! Babies don't keep. And I am trying to remember that everytime I get frustrated that Baby Jack or my daughter, Bowe just wants to be held and I can't get anything else done. Good luck with the daycare decision. It is so hard to know. But whatever you choose will be the best for you and your family!
