bad news comes in threes

This should have been a nice well thought out eloquent post, but it's not.  I'm not one of these mothers who always looks put together, in fact, I'm that mother that mothers shake their head at.  "How does she even go out of the house looking like that?"  The type of mother that runs out in her pajamas packing her child in the carseat to take her somewhere she's freaking out thinking her child is seriously sick.

It's been a horrible week in the Joiner household.  Well if this week started on Friday evening that is.  Sophie started having some poop issues on Friday (I know this isn't exactly the most scintillating topic).  It just started out as more poops than normal and slightly acidic.  So we began putting some Boudreaux's on it and thought nothing of it, until Saturday morning.  By this time she had a horrible diaper rash, her poops were now mostly liquid with the previous meal (undigested) in there as well.  And since Saturday she has "pooped" 5-6 times a day, acidic and painful. She'll wake up from a nap or sleep crying her eyes out because of the pain.

We called her doctor on Monday as to what to do. She said as long as Sophie doesn't have a fever there really isn't anything to do.  Change her diet to help solidify the poop and watch her for a fever, but other than that, wait it out.  Wait it out?  My daughter is in pain and all we can do is wait it out?

How can I handle that?  I would give anything to take her pain away and make this all go away.  Anything.  She dreads getting changed and hates sitting for too long, it breaks my heart hearing her cry.  She even runs away from me when it's time to be changed because she knows it's going to be painful.  My normally happy cheerful baby is in pain.  I just don't know what to do.  And while it's not all day, she usually acts like herself most of the day, it's at night when it gets worse and she gets inconsolable some nights.  Like tonight, tonight was a horrible, horrible night. I  ended up packing her up to go to the emergency room because I didn't know what else to do.  I figured something was seriously wrong with her.  She wouldn't calm down, she had puked and just well I was frazzled and alone.

We ended up not going to the emergency room.  Kyle intercepted us and got me calmed down and Sophie (thank god for husbands).  We did end up talking to a nurse on the help line that our health insurance provides.  Sophie ended up having seriously bad gas, which was what was making everything worse.  but with the puking and the diarrhea I thought it was something else, but for now, she's back at home and I'm still up waiting for her to go down.  This has been a tough week for all the members in our household, even Fluffy, she hates seeing one of us in pain.

I'm sorry for such a frazzled post, I guess I just need someone to tell me it'll be alright and that we'll all get through this.  This is the first time Sophie's ever really been sick with something we can't figure out what's causing it, we're not sure if it's food or viral.

~~~UPDATE~~~
we just came back from the doctors.  She's not 100% and the doctor wants us to carefully monitor her for a fever, but that Sophie is hopefully through the worst of it.  She's positive it is viral, and that most viral illnesses run their course in about a week, and that Sophie is almost at a week, so she should start feeling better.  But if she doesn't, her pediatrician said we'll need a stool sample (a dirty diaper) for next Friday to be sent in for salmonella and other testing.
I think what helped me the most was hearing that we were doing a great job and that we clearly were doing everything we could for Sophie and that everything we had been doing for Sophie was the correct thing to be doing. I think I needed to hear that far more than I realized.  Her pediatrician is the nicest lady around and always brings me out of the clouds when I'm freaking out.  I don't know if she remembers, but she was actually my pediatrician as well (probably why I like her so much).
thank you for all of your well wishes and sweet thoughts for sophie, here's to hoping that she'll be this happy next week!
    1. Thank you Sammy! I appreciate your prayers. We're taking her to the doctors today to have her checked out and make sure nothing else is wrong. The puking is a new symptom.
  2. Sweet Liz, welcome to the perils of motherhood. The gut wrenching feeling you can't help your baby. It is the one feeling that you wish we never have to experience. It is difficult to watch a child suffer, let alone your child. Unfortunately, there will be times you have to "wait it out." I dislike those words because, I don't like to wait. I want it fixed NOW. Sounds like she picked up a bug and bugs have to come out of the system. Sitz baths will use the pain on her bottom and keep it dry as best you can. Balmex ointment works wonders in keeping a barrier on the skin if you can get her to let you put it on. It will pass and sounds like you are on top of it so you won't let it get any worse. Breathe sweet momma, breathe!!
  4. Oh gosh Liz I'm so sorry. I know dogs aren't the same thing but I freak any time there's anything wrong with my dogs - I can't imagine how much that is magnified with Sophie. I'm keeping you in my thoughts and if you just need to chat or let anything out you can message me. *big hugs*
    1. thank you Krysten!! Of course dogs are just as important, my cat is highly important, even with Sophie in the picture. Although usually Fluffy just hacks up a hairball and goes about her way. We are taking her to the doctors to have her checked out and make sure there isn't anything else wrong.
    1. Yes this is so true! the doctor said that it's because she's settled down for the night she would feel the pain more often, but she gave us the go ahead to give her some tylenol and motrin, which I didn't know so I feel bad for allowing her to be in pain so long :( but she seems so much better tonight.
  8. Aww, hope you're all doing better soon!! We've had the stomach flu in our house three times this year and it's the WORST!!!!!!!!! You did a great job doing everything you could and sometimes handing off to Daddy is the best option :)
  9. Aww, Liz, I completely understand. It's hard to see our babies sick. We would do anything to make them better and the fact that we're powerless is overwhelming. Praying everything improves.
    Thank you for sharing (and for linking up to the #SHINEbloghop).
    Wishing you a lovely day.
    xoxo
  11. Oh my. I've had LOTS of poop issues with my daughter (I'm a poop pro now, seriously. And sadly.) It sounds to me like it's something in her diet. Which could have been from Wednesday or Thursday from last week. Which, if you can remember what she ate, props to you because I know I couldn't. But keep us updated! Just make sure she is very well hydrated, and honestly? If it means letting her walk around bare butt, I'd do it. Lay some blankets on the living room floor and quarantine her to that area and let her bottom get some air. Not fun for cleanup, but maybe worth it? Another idea is I've heard of people doing a diaper rash mix with water and some cream and spraying it on? I've never had to do that, but it might be easier than trying to rub cream on her?
    1. That's what I thought as well!! I was convinced it was dietary, but we saw her doctor, and she thinks it's more a viral thing, whatever it is, I just want it to go away! I may try that other concoction for the diaper rash, it has gotten a lot better than it was last night. And we've definitely been doing air time to let it breathe.
    1. thank you Penny! We're hoping she's on the mend. the doctor told us we could give her tylenol (we didn't know we could) and she seems much happier and her diaper rash is actually getting better.
  13. It's always unsettling to get the "nothing you can do" void from anyone let alone a doctor. I'm glad your husband was able to calm you guys down because though situations like that can be scary, the $200 emergency room bill for gas would have just drove you mad when you found out she was ok. It's always frustrating when our kids are sick, upset, hurt, but remember the fact that you care this much makes you an amazing mama. She's lucky to have a mom willing to do anything to make her feel even a little bit better. Keep your head high, we will be praying for you guys!
  15. Poor girl! Its so hard when our babies are sick. I have been there with both of my boys. Except I always made it to the hospital just in time for their fever to drop and they both acted like there was nothing wrong with them. I said a prayer and I hope she is feeling better by now! Hugs!
  20. Aww, that is no fun! It is so hard to know what to do when our little ones are in pain and there is nothing we can do. I have called my pediatrician so many times over the last year because I tend to freak out too! When my son had an allergic reaction to eggs, I was so frantic. Thankfully, my husband was able to be the calm one like yours! I sure hope Sophie starts to feel better and you are able to get some sleep tonight.
