being a mother: what no one told me

I remember when I was pregnant I always got advice. No matter where I went, whether it was in the grocery line, or at work, or the random stranger on the street, I always heard something new.

you'll want another....
she won't stay little forever.....
you'll never sleep again....

I thought I was ready to be a mother.  I really did, but life had not prepared me well for motherhood.  It really hadn't.  I learned that being a mother meant giving up everything and gaining the whole world.  Despite the advice that I had gotten, there that no one told me.

what no one told me:
that I would fall in love with her everyday

that I would cry over every milestone, walking, first tooth, talking

that I would have an internal argument of wanting her to not grow up/grow up

that worrying over every little thing would become a norm

that I always want to carry her even though she's getting too heavy to hold

that I want to cuddle with her as much as I can

that time goes twice as fast

that holding a toddler in one arm and vacuuming is an everyday occurrence

that she would amaze me with everything she does

that she would learn so so quickly

that sitting there and watching her would be so mesmerizing

that my life would be turned upside down (in a completely good way)

that I'm so in love with being a mother

that my husband would be the most supportive and patient man I'd ever known (but I kind of already knew it)

and that color of our child's poop would become appropriate dinner conversation

  1. Time definitely goes twice as fast!! And I never knew I'd talk about poop so much either. Lol.

  2. I can totally relate to the 'Toddler in One Arm, Vacuum in the Other' - it's amazing how much you can do with one hand when you have a little one, isn't it!

    And yes, time does fly!

    1. Hi Kate, wish you weren't a no-reply blogger, but yes time does fly so quickly. And I've learned how to do so many things one handed nowadays. I've certainly become more dexterous.

  10. LOL at that last one. My daughter is 3 now. Around Christmas she started having some medical issues so her bowel movements or lack of them or whatever just became part of almost every conversation. And definitely on the "grow up/don't grow up" thing.

  14. It is amazing how children change us, and in reality there isn't anything another parent can say that will truly prepare someone as she expects her first child... the funny thing is that it stays true each time a new kid comes into a family, baby 2 brought new experiences and baby 3 did as well...
