From the moment Sophie was born there was no doubt that I was going back to work full time when I was done with maternity leave. I didn't want to, but we just didn't make enough at the time to afford for me to stay at home full time and Kyle working.
When I'm at work, I miss Sophie and Kyle terribly. In a perfect world, one of us would stay at home full time and the other would work full time. I know that Kyle would prefer to be the stay at home dad.
being a working mom (my truths):
It's tough waking up every morning, being as quiet as a mouse, kissing Kyle on the forehead because he's still sleeping, kissing the baby monitor before I leave. Looking at Sophie peacefully sleeping without a care in the world.
I'm leaving too early and getting home too late, there's just not enough time in the day for Sophie time.
I know I look tired everyday, but being a mother can do that sometimes. Gone are the young, youthful eyes I had, replaced with the
I live for the weekends, the two days that I have Sophie and Kyle for myself. The time spent with them is never long enough.
I hold back tears on some days when Sophie had a rough night before knowing that she could have a rough morning and all she wanted was to be held until she fell asleep in my arms.
Some days I just flat out cry in my car because I question if I'm doing the right thing.
I check my phone constantly to see if Kyle's texted me anything about Sophie or we facetime so that we can all see each other for 15 minutes before she has to go down and I have to get back to work.
There are times, more often than not, that I feel so guilty for working, but nothing makes me feel better knowing that Kyle's home with her.
I come into work disheveled from the lack of sleep I got the night before and hope no one notices, but undoubtedly someone does, and as I smile through my tiredness, I try to ignore the fact that being a mother has made me exhausted to a level I never thought before.
I use my lunch break to see how Sophie is or to call to make doctor's appointment or checking to see if there are any other cheaper options for daycare then the one we've chosen. But in truth, I'd rather not put Sophie into daycare.
I pretend it doesn't bother me when my co-workers tease me about never going to happy hour or being adventurous, but in reality, I do miss the spontaneity I used to have, and then I feel bad for missing it.
I keep my eyes on the clock all day, and am out the door the moment it hits 4:30PM
Nothing makes me happier after a long day than walking home and seeing Sophie's face light up as she's squealing running to my legs to hug me.
I stay up late after she's gone down to clean up behind Sophie, pick up her toys, start the washer, move the clothes from the dryer, fold clothes, and pick up any other messes I can quietly.
At the end of the day, I go to bed exhausted, sad that the day for Sophie is over, and that I feel like I didn't spend enough time with Sophie before she went to bed.
But to all of my working moms out there - remind yourself, you are doing the right thing, and you are not a bad mom, you are the best mom you can be. You always will be. You are a good mom, despite the fact that you think you may not, you are a great mom, but most of all, you are her mom.
You are such a wonderful mother and Sophie will one day read this post and thank you for doing all that you do! xo, biana - BlovedBoston
Reply DeleteMotherhood is absolutely no joke and truly the hardest job on this planet. Your post has ripped my heart out. I want to hug you and tell you you are a wonderful mommy and even if it looks dreary you are incredibly blessed. I feel certain things will change to allow you more one on one time for you and your sweet little family. Happy Mother's Day. Xo Amanda
Reply DeleteThank you! Some days it's easier than others, but then there are days like today it's really hard. Sophie's had a rough few days with her teeth. So I always feel bad about leaving her even if she is in capable hands she's still my baby girl.

Reply DeleteSomeday I will be a working mother too, it won't be possible for me to stay home because Joes work is so sporadic and considered seasonal, plus with building our house there's no way we'd afford one of us not working. I can imagine it will be really hard, but you're also providing for her a good and fulfilling life!
Reply DeleteAppreciate your honesty in this post--and I think it is very affirming and encouraging. I wanna save this reminder for when I have my own little babe one day!!
Reply DeleteMotherhood is touch no matter how you slice it. Working mom, stay at home mom. It is obvious how much you adore your little girl! Hang in there. All you can do is your best!
Reply DeleteHappy Mother's Day!

Any type of mom is definitely tough! Thank you! Hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day as well!
DeleteI know what you mean: work issues were a big whack of what made my marriage go kerplooey. Before we reached that point, though, I know the best moment of my day was when I'd get home to my twin daughters (then aged nearly two). Grace would look up as if to say "oh, you're back? That's nice", but Rachel's little face would light up and she'd toddle up to me as fast as her feet would go! Happy memories :)
Reply DeleteI say kudos to all the working moms. I don't know how you do it. Just know she sees a strong independent momma who knows how to take care of her baby. She knows. You juggle so much and I'm in awe of how you do it. There are days I just want to stay in my Jammie's all day and watch Mickey, but I know there is learning to do!
Reply DeleteBeing a working mom is so hard! I finally got the opportunity to stay at home with my kids when my youngest was in preschool and my oldest in 2nd grade... this is usually when most moms return to work, but I feel they need me more now then ever and there are so many school activities and I love have the summers off with them. I will never forget handing them over to my mom when I returned to work each time when they were both 3 months. It is SO hard. But, it doesn't mean you lover them any less and if anything it makes you appreciate your time with them so much more. Also, I think I was so much better at multi-tasking when I was working full-time then I am now!
Reply DeleteI don't have kids, but I know when we do we'll probably both have to work full-time (we even 'argue' over who would get to stay at home with the baby if one of us could!). I clearly haven't experienced it, but reading your words summed up the stuff I worry about when I think about the future.
Reply DeleteAnd the fact that you think about her all day and miss her so much means you're a great mom. :)
Liz, you sweet, wonderful, loving woman - having been on both sides of the fence, my words for you are - stop beating yourself up. Many women HAVE to work these days. No question about it. The fact that you are NOT putting her into daycare speaks for itself. What you are doing leaving her with her father, is a blessing! Yes, that ugly guilt is going to keep popping itself up to bring you down, don't let it my friend. As long as she is with one of you, she is okay, she is loved, she is cared for. She knows how much mommy loves her! So when those tears come in the car, let them come, dry your eyes and put on a happy song and sing yourself to work. And tell yourself, "I am a good mother." You spilled your heart out here and you don't even know how many hearts you touched.
